Shalom and welcome to Leipzig! On this 3 hour tour you will learn the interesting facts about the contribution of the Jewish citizens of Leipzig to the cultural and commercial development of the city throughout the history. Together we will visit the most important places of Jewish cultural, commercial and religious heritage.

Leipzig has been home to Jews since the 12th century. With the development of international trade, the importance of the Leipzig fair grew, as did the significance of Jewish participation in the fair. Jewish businessmen from Poland and Russia made the city the center of the fur trade with its home in the Brühl. The University of Music and Theatre "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig is a huge part of the city´s rich musical heritage and represents the cultural input of Leipzig Jews. In 1925 Leipzig officially held the largest Jewish community in Saxony with more than 13000 Jews. Today Leipzig has the biggest Jewish community in the Middle Germany with more than 1200 members.

At the end of the tour you will be familiar with the jewish history of Leipzig and will know what do the Society for Family Education and for People´s Welfare, the Museum of Musical Instruments of Leipzig University, HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management and Gohlis district have to do with the Leipzig Jews.

Schalom und willkommen in Leipzig! Auf diesem 3-stündigen Rundgang erfahren Sie Wissenswertes über den Beitrag der jüdischen Bürger Leipzigs zur kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung der Stadt im Laufe der Geschichte. Gemeinsam besuchen wir die wichtigsten Orte des jüdischen Kultur-, Handels- und Religionserbes.

Leipzig ist seit dem 12. Jahrhundert die Heimat der Juden. Mit der Entwicklung des internationalen Handels wuchs die Bedeutung der Leipziger Messe und damit auch die Bedeutung der jüdischen Beteiligung an der Messe. Jüdische Geschäftsleute aus Polen und Russland machten die Stadt mit ihrer Heimat im Brühl zum Zentrum des Pelzhandels. Die Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig ist ein großer Teil des reichen musikalischen Erbes der Stadt und repräsentiert den kulturellen Input der Leipziger Juden. 1925 fand in Leipzig offiziell die größte jüdische Gemeinde Sachsens mit mehr als 13000 Juden statt. Heute hat Leipzig die größte jüdische Gemeinde in Mitteldeutschland mit mehr als 1200 Mitgliedern.

Am Ende des Rundgangs werden Sie mit der jüdischen Geschichte Leipzigs vertraut sein und wissen, was die Gesellschaft für Familienbildung und Volkswohlfahrt, das Musikinstrumentenmuseum der Universität Leipzig, die HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management und der Stadtteil Gohlis mit den Leipziger Juden zu tun haben.
